September 25 - More Media

The Sky at Night

At 42 years, the BBC's "The Sky at Night" is evidently the longest running single-host TV show. The Web site includes information about current shows, related topics, and even a glossary. Also, a great page of links related to subjects discussed on the show. You never know... (thanks to Netsurfer for these two recommendations).

September 25 - Google

Google

It's time to take another look at Google, now that it is out of "beta." The search engine has its unique "PageRank" system for relevant hits, ranking pages with the most links leading to it the highest, on the assumption that they would have the most relevant information. It also has a built-in proximity function; if you search for several terms it ranks those pages on which the terms are closest together the highest. There is also a new function, "google scout," which is similar to the "pages like this" function found in other search engines.

JokEc: Jokes about economists and economics

September 22 - Searching

Go Profit: the World's Financial Search Engine

This Inktomi-powered financial search engine presents a directory of " high quality links to financial web based information." The first page of results come from the site's directory, while subsequent listings come from the millions of pages crawled by Inktomi. On the entry page there is an option to search by language, though I found its use limited when testing for Swedish. There is also a simple search page. The home page itself offers a wide variety of information that is both local and global in orientation.

Cambridge International Dictionaries Online

Search for the word "lift" in the Cambridge International Dictionary of English, and you'll learn it's called elevator in American English. Or try searching for wire - you'll find lead (electrical) among the entries. An interesting reference that points out the differences among UK, Australian, and American usage. Also available for searching are the Cambridge International Dictionary of Idioms and the Cambridge International Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs.
