July 10 - Global Internet Users

Global Base of Internet Users to Reach 130 Million by Year-End 1999

This article is relevant to translators for two reasons (at least); for one, the Internet is our workplace, and it is important to stay on top of the latest trends. This is great terminology harvesting - sureIy I am not the only one translating this type of analysis regularly. Besides, it's interesting!

July 10 - Digital Economy

The Emerging Digital Economy

This annual report from the US government describes the "dramatic changes" in the "emerging digital economy." It's our world - we should know about it.

July 10 - Searching: Images

Finding Images on the Web

From Boston University's library, this site explains in detail how to find images on the Web. July 9 - Errors

Common Errors in English

This site reviews pairs of words that are commonly confused, as well as "non-errors: those usages which people keep telling you are wrong," but which aren't. There are also many English language links to visit.

July 8 - EU Terminology Database

Terminological Information System

This site declares: "TIS on the Web is a simplified version of the terminological database used by terminologists and translators working in The General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union." I ran a couple of Swedish words through this, and the hits showed the terms used in phrases. Response time was very quick. The site is experimental, and they welcome suggestions and comments. Looks like it's worth giving this a try, while getting your input heard.

July 8 - Legal: Japanese

Japan Law

English translations of "major laws" from Japan, including laws involving foreign exchange and banking, as well as regulations concerning preparation of financial statements. Looks useful for the Japanese translator - though I have been informed that there is no one 'official' English translation of Japanese laws.

July 8 - Searching

Searchpower

While I have always been a believer in "less is better" when it comes to search engines - learn a few, and learn them well - this one is interesting because it classifies its 1703 search engines by subject. For example, click Foreign Language Search to find over 300 language specific search engines. It surely is worth a look to see how this works.

July 7 - EU

Eurofocus

News items from the EU aimed at journalists "dealing with everyday events." May as well stay on top of what's happening, since we'll be translating it before long - and it appears to be available in all the EU languages.

July 7 - Internet Legal Decisions

Internet Library of Law and Court Decisions

The subject matter concerns our workplace, the Internet - and the terminology is good harvesting for legal translations. These are "summaries of court decisions shaping the law of the web; providing facts, analysis and pertinent quotes from cases of interest to those involved in New Media addressing copyright, trademark, dilution and other intellectual property issues, jurisdiction, linking, framing, meta tags, clip-art, defamation, domain name, e-mail, encryption, gambling, click-wrap agreements, shrink-wrap licenses, spamming and other subjects." From the site of law firm Phillips Nizer Benjamin Krim & Ballon.

July 6 - Emergency Medicine

eMedicine - Online Text Emergency Medicine

An online textbook is an excellent addition to the arsenal of the medical translator. This one for emergency medicine is an excellent reference for the electronic shelf (there is an orthopedics textbook among my medical links).

July 6 - EU Glossary

A Glossary of the European Communities and the European Union

Seems you can never get enough "Acronyms, Initiatives, Institutions, Policies, Programmes, Terms" about the EU; this site is from the University of Aberdeen.

July 6 - TLAs

Over 5000 TLAs

A few days ago, a colleague referred to TLAs, and I wondered - what's that? And I learned it's a Three Letter Acronym. There seem to be quite a few of those; this site provides you with over 5000 of them, but the folks at Rocket Information Sciences would be happy to sell you a CD with over 42,000 TLAs! What do you *do* with that many??

top

July 5 - Scandinavian Languages

Scandinavian Studies Web

These are "scholarly resources in Scandinavian studies." Find links for newspapers, references, history, politics, the book trade, other gateways, more. A most interesting visit to the library: while the US libraries are those with large Scandinvian collections, a visit to the Scandinavian libraries often includes excellent links to sites in each country.
