July 3 - Info Finder

Needle in a Cyber Stack

Still recovering from jet lag, so here is a site to keep you busy for a while, lots of information to travel in many directions. Some gems can be harvested.

July 3 - Singing...

Demented Lyrics

This site is pure fun - at least for those who share a rather sick sense of humor. Please do check my personal fave, Tom Lehrer, and then there's Monty Python, or why not Groucho Marx... a good laugh never hurt any overworked translator...

top

July 3 - Wine

Wine Spectator Wine Library

Wine comes around as a subject for translation often enough, and this site features a glossary, descriptions of wine by country, and various other tidbits that might come in handy.

July 2 - Friday Fun

July 2, wait a minute... it's hardly July 1! But, tucked away in the fine print at the bottom of this page, it says that this site will be updated daily barring deadlines and travel plans. Today it's travel plans - my annual migration from the American west coast to the Swedish west coast. Since I don't have a transatlantic ISP, here are a few sites for Friday while I'm midair. Enjoy...

July 1 - Environment

TOMORROW on the Web

Billed as "your business environment toolkit," this site gives the latest worldwide business environmental news. Since that's what we translate...

July 1 - Scitech

Scitech Review

Keeping up with ideas and terminology is important in every field, imho - and here is the perfect place to see what is happening in scitech. And to avoid being one-sided you can always visit the sister site, Arts and Letters Daily.

July 1 - Customs

Getting Through Customs

Since my suitcases are packed, and my passport and tickets are ready for the journey, this one touched close to home. Articles about doing business in different cultures; localization, as it were. Are they good or bad? No time to look now, but the issues are worth thinking about.

June 30 - Calculators

Measure for Measure: Sites That Do the Work For You

This oldie but goodie belongs in every set of bookmarks. Calculators for math, science, finance, health and a little of "everything else." Among my favorites: Capacity and Volume, with its cooking measures, various US and Uk measures - and old Russian measures!

top

June 30 - Construction

Institute for Research in Construction

Subjects here include "Building Envelope and Structure," "Fire Risk Management," "Indoor Environment," "Urban Intrastructure Rehabilitation", and a bit more. Check the links, too - good terminology harvesting.

top

June 30 - ISO 14000

FAQs About 14000

Excellent analysis and review of the alphabet soup of ISO, EMAS, EMAR, and the various programs.

top

June 29 - Italian

Italian Studies Web

This gateway strives to provide access to high quality, scholarly resources. Italian gateways, history, search engines, literature, publishers, embassies, newspapers - I imagine quite a bit of time can be spent exploring!

top

June 29 - Management, Environment

Management Institute for Environment & Business

"The Management Institute for Environment and Business (MEB) was founded in 1990 to help companies improve environmental quality through business success." Sustainable development, green shareholders, a section in Spanish about Latin America - this could be *your* next project...

June 29 - Telecommuting

The Telecommuter's Toolkit

As a telecommuter about to take my show on the road, information about the equipment needed, things to think about, adventures in telecommunication - are all worthwhile. Laptops, Internet Cafés, free faxing, maps - loads of info.

June 28 - Knowledge

Knowledge @ Wharton

Knowlege @ Wharton "offers the latest business insights, information and research from a variety of sources." Which translates to the latest trends and terminology for translators to stay on top of the field. Areas include finance, management, insurance, ethics, marketing, health economics - all those issues we face. Cutting edge.

top

June 28 - Timber

Timber Fact Sheets In Europe and North America

"Forest and Forest Industries Country Fact Sheets provides an overview of forest resources and forest products in the following countries of the UN/ECE region." Good explanatory notes for terminology; each entry is in English and French. Don't miss the industry links here.

top

June 28 - Auto Acronyms

Automotive Abbreviations

The latest alphabet soup from the world of cars. Provides the acronym, its expansion, and/or an explanation of the car manufacturer or country of origin. Good stuff!

top

June 27 - Competitiveness

Sector Competitive Frameworks Homepage

The list of industrial sectors alone is valuable for translators, just for the terminology to be found; the fact that this information is available in both French and English is helpful for that group. Overview and prospects are presented for each industry, and some have a "Framework for Action" as well, with suggestions for government/industry actions to improve competitiveness. Be sure to check the background information to the framework series. Much food for thought.

June 27 - Your Nation

Your Nation

Billed as "the site that lets you discover just how different the world is," compare data from two different countries, generate a report for individual countries, or rank data for the top or bottom five countries. Data comes from the CIA World Factbook, and more features are expected to be added. (Note: the technology is beyond the current capabilities of the Opera browser, so check this with Netscape or IE.)

top

June 27 - Telecom

Telecommunications Industry Association

One of my favorite subjects for translation, this site features a glossary of acronyms, a section on international affairs, and standards and technology. Good for terminology harvesting - or just plain staying on top of the industry.
